don’t worry, CA is doomed as long as you guys vote for people that take their jobs and benefits as the most important reason for being in public service. You can only provide what you can pay for and you cannot just raise taxes because of Union protection. There is enough money in the budget but spent for the wrong reason. Yes, there are social needs, but there are no entitlements to solve them. Educations is important, but to pay teacher benefits as done in CA is just ridiculous. Even education most be considerd with Return on Investment views not a god given entitlement. Teaching the gays value to society in school (but discarding the US History) and teaching and education kids that being gay is as good as being straight is not a good way to spent our money and time in school. I lived in CA and run away last year. The CA model is doomed and just about to fail. Good weather alone is not sufficient, you need companies that are willing to move to CA not to run away from CA. Brown and the Dems are trying hard to get rid of all people that can pay taxes. Just accept it, you got what you have asked for. If you start as a teacher in CA and work until 55 or so, you get more benefits/pay as retiree than when you were working. There is no country in the world that can carry the high costs of Gov as it exists in CA.

Thomas, I don’t agree with setting things up so most people would only teach for a few years after college. I would encourage more career-changers to move INTO teaching and education. Right after college, I don’t think I would have been a good teacher. Many of my classmates would not have been so great, either. Before I changed careers, I worked as a statistician, which helped me when I was later teaching math. The students I found most impressive in my recent education courses were career-changers who were older. (I am not criticizing younger people; I am just saying they usually have less experience.)

On the other hand, I would increase the emphasis on knowledge of subject matter, rather than on education degrees, as you suggest. I mentioned in another post that I found my math-department courses to be more useful than my education courses for my ability to teach math.
