Dice were called “bones,” and a “bolt” was a blunt arrow. To be “boned” was to be apprehended by a constable, but a “bonesetter” was a hard-trotting horse. An awkward lout or clodhopper of a fellow was known as a “dog booby,” and a book-keeper was a person who never returned borrowed books. A “bo-peep” was someone who hid themselves, and a bore was no different than today—a tedious, troublesome man or woman who bores the ears of his hearers with an uninteresting tale.

A Call to Prayer

In many circles, it is not very fashionable to pray. Prayer is one of the things that many would be ashamed to own  up to. There are hundreds who would sooner storm a beach, or lead a forlorn hope, than confess publicly that they make a habit of prayer. There are thousands who, if obliged to sleep in the same room with a stranger, would lie down in bed without praying. To dress well, to go to theaters, to be thought clever and agreeable, all this is fashionable, but not to pray. I cannot think a habit is common which so many seem ashamed to own.
